Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a Catalyst for Innovation in East Africa

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing industries, redefining economies, and shaping the future of work across the globe. In East Africa, where rapid technological advancements are intersecting with a youthful and innovative population, AI presents an unprecedented opportunity to drive sustainable development, enhance industrial transformation, and position the region as a leader in the global digital economy. East Africa stands at the forefront of a new technological renaissance, where AI-driven solutions are accelerating progress in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, finance, and manufacturing.

With an estimated 77% of the population under the age of 35, the region holds immense potential to leverage AI for solving complex challenges, improving efficiency, and fostering entrepreneurship. Countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda are already making strides with national AI policies, research hubs, and AI-powered innovations transforming industries and communities As the Director of the DeKUT Siemens Mechatronics Certification Centre and Founder of Virtual Mechatronics Labs (VML), I have witnessed firsthand how AI, coupled with technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Digital Twin (DT), and Robotics, is reshaping human-machine collaboration in engineering, industrial automation, and education.

At Virtual Mechatronics Labs (VML), we are pioneering these AI-driven innovations to empower the next generation of engineers, researchers, and industry leaders. This presentation, delivered at the 13th Academia-Public-Private Partnership Forum (APPPF)-2025 in Kigali, Rwanda, will explore:
